Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries

The wineries on Old Mission Peninsula are uniquely situated at the globe’s 45th parallel – the ideal climate for growing varietal wine grapes. International wine enthusiasts have recognized the ten wineries that comprise this stunning appellation for the exceptional quality of their wines. Each of these wineries benefit from the unique protection afforded by the narrow peninsula’s proximity to one of Lake Michigan’s most beautiful bays. In addition to providing stunning vistas, the deep waters of the east and west arms of Grand Traverse Bay serve a multiple purpose: the lingering warmth of the water in the fall helps to starve off early frosts while the bays’ cold spring temperatures prevent premature budding during a warm spring.
The characteristics of this ‘micro-climate’ result in the production of award-winning wines from the dedicated vintners who hone their craft on the glacially formed landscape known as Old Mission Peninsula.
The wineries located on Old Mission Peninsula include:

Each of our hand-crafted wines is produced under our winemaker’s meticulous supervision from vineyard to bottle. Our vineyard development in Michigan began in 1983 when sweet and tart cherry orchards were replaced with grafted grape vines of the vinifera species – the same type grown along other parts of the forty-fifth parallel. • Mari Vineyards

IMG_6645Mari Vineyards founder Marty Lagina made the (some would say) crazy choice to grow grapes that shouldn’t grow in Michigan, with the belief that he could produce world class wines that otherwise couldn’t be made here. So, true to his Italian heritage, he planted exotic varieties like Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and others. Combined with a little creative grape growing and a lot of attention, today his dream has become a reality. Along with classic area grapes like Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Mari Vineyards produces a wide variety of red wines unlike anything else produced in Michigan.
